Chillout Escalante
Our location is in an artistic neighborhood of San Jose Costa Rica called Barrio Escalante. It has a different vibe than other parts of the city. It is a more hip and trendy place for young people. There are many cafes, shops, and art galleries around.
And it is important to tell that it is a safe and clean neighborhood.
In our hostel, we also want a place where people have cultural interaction, artistic events, and a very social atmosphere but not a party atmosphere.

My experience at Chillout was a very positive one. The tasks at reception are very managable and Andy is a flexible host if you need to plan for trips around CR. Escalante is also one of the best areas within San Jose and perfect if you, like most people, are traveling without a car. There are plenty of bars and cafes and it's lively on the weekends. The hostel itself is very relaxed and clean and you will meet travelers and friendly staff from all around the world. I would definitely recommend volunteering here to anyone interested in a base in San Jose during their time in the country.

He was responsible, friendly, and did the job as required. He was flexible when needed, communicated well, and there were no issues. We were happy with him.

I had an unexpected emergency come up at home and had to leave before the end of my commitment. The host proceeded to demand payment for my stay (even though I had already worked a handful of shifts for him) and threatened to go to the authorities and deny my exit of the country if I did not pay.
Other than that, the property is very clean and orderly. The surrounding area is nice too.

We’re sorry to hear about your emergency, but since you stayed in Costa Rica, we couldn’t verify it. You did not work any shifts or fulfill the agreed volunteer work, which was unexpected from someone honest. Our policy is clear: if you stay without contributing work as agreed, we must request payment for the stay. Honesty and communication are key, and we expected the same from you.
That said, we’re glad you found the property clean and the area nice.
