Akuratatha organization

🌱 Why Volunteer at Akuratatha?

Akuratatha is more than a volunteer program — it’s a family.
When you join us in the heart of southern Sri Lanka, you become part of a community that’s deeply committed to giving children a better future through love, education, and hope.
✨ What Makes Akuratatha Special?

Meaningful Impact
You’ll teach and mentor children — especially girls — who come from difficult backgrounds, helping them learn English and life skills that can change their future.

Authentic Cultural Exchange
Live like a local. Stay in a peaceful village near Akuressa, take part in Buddhist traditions, Sri Lankan cooking, and community events.

Personal Connection
We welcome each volunteer as a daughter or son of Akuratatha. You will form real bonds with the children and fellow volunteers — this is not just a placement, it’s a human connection.

Safe and Supportive Environment
You’ll stay at our homestay with guidance from a local English-speaking teacher. We keep things simple, safe, and filled with warmth.

Your Contribution Matters
The €125 volunteer fee covers your meals, accommodation, and transport — and directly supports the children’s home and local education programs.

🙏 Meet the People Behind Akuratatha Hello! I'm Sahan Wijesiri, a teacher, community leader, and the founder of Akuratatha — a small, heart-driven organization in Akuressa, Sri Lanka. For over 10 years, I’ve worked closely with children from rural areas and orphanages to give them new chances through education and love. Akuratatha was born from a deep wish to support children in need, especially girls who’ve faced hardship, and to build bridges between our local community and kind-hearted people from around the world. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Our Team Sahan (Founder & Host): A full-time teacher, guide, translator, and your main contact. I live at the homestay where volunteers stay and will be with you every step of the way — from your first day to your goodbye. Local Mothers & Teachers: We work with caring local women who help with cooking, cleaning, and supporting the children. They’ll make you feel like part of the family. The Akuratatha Children: Beautiful, talented, and full of potential. Many have lived through trauma and now shine with the help of volunteer teachers. They’ll love you — and never forget you. 💛 How Will You Be Treated? At Akuratatha, you are never just a volunteer — you are family. You will be welcomed warmly at the airport or bus station. You’ll be treated with kindness, respect, and gratitude. You’ll receive clear guidance but also the freedom to use your creativity in classes and activities. You’ll have meals provided, clean rooms, and time to explore Sri Lanka. Most of all, we will care for you — just as you care for our children.
