Chiara and the team at O Projecto the shelter are inspiring in how tirelessly and passionately they care for the animals in the shelter. They truly love every single rescued individual and go above and beyond every day to care for them, no matter what. I had a great time volunteering - sometimes the work was intense but it always felt rewarding, I learned so much and being with the animals was fantastic. I would recommend volunteering at O Projecto the shelter to vegans and non vegans alike.

My volunteering time here was truly meaningful and enriching. Working with the animals was so much joy , and after a few days I felt comfortable with the daily routine. Chiara is incredibly kind and always there when you need her, and everyone made me feel welcome and part of the community. The location is perfect for combining volunteering with discovering Portugal, with time to rest or explore even on working days. A very special detail is the little pig living in the volunteer house—absolutely adorable and guaranteed to make you smile every day. I would love to come back one day. :))

We met a lot of amazing humans and animals here and got to learn so much about the importance of sanctuaries! Even though both of us are the shelter, we gained a whole different appreciation for veganism as a movement. The work is very hands-on and the hours are respected. There's a possibility your days off are not always together if you apply as a couple. The scheduling is done per week, meaning sometimes you have to work for more than 5 days in a row, depending on your arrival day. Other than this it is a wonderful experience that we think is so important, and we wish everyone there the best :)

This project was our first volunteer experience, and there couldn't have been a better place for it. Chiara and the others gave us a very warm welcome, and we immediately felt at home. Even though the team's daily work was sometimes stressful, and they had a lot to take care of, they never took it out on us. The work these people do every day and the energy they put into the animals' well-being is simply awesome and makes the whole experience incredibly inspiring. Thanks again to everyone for making this possible; we highly recommend this project!☺️

Working with the animals at the shelter was an incredible experience, when you're with them, they're the only thing on your mind, and they fill you with peace!! The hosts were very welcoming and cooked amazing Italian meals every day :) I already miss all the little animals so much, and I'm really grateful for the time I spent there

If you have a love for animals - big or small, this is a place to experience. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed not only by sweet animals but by the incredible people who keep this the shelter going. The daily work is hands on (feeding the animals, cleaning enclosures and helping with maintenance) but it never feels like a chore when you have beautiful animals around you. Whether you're a seasoned the shelter caretaker or new to working around large animals there's a place for you. I had an amazing experience at the shelter! working with the animals can be hard and tiring but it's also incredibly rewarding; while spending time at the shelter you really get to know each one of the animals and their personalities and it's impossible not to get attached to them. Chiara is really an amazing host, she provides the volunteers all they need for them to be comfortable during their staying. I highly recommend this experience to all the shelter lovers.

I am not even sure how I can begin to describe how grateful I am to have done this experience. How grateful I am to Chiara and the shelter itself. The work that they do here is TRULY SO IMPACTFUL. And it is a bonus that Chiara and her husband are not only great hosts, but also hilarious and fun. I noticed doing the work, how much they truly care about the animals. I realized how uneducated I was on the basic care for animals because we have been so desensitized to it. This experience does open your eyes, and it truly humbles you and makes you want to change for the better.

It was my first volunteering experience and it couldn't have been any better!! It's a team of the kindest people that make you feel welcome and included right from the beginning. The first few days the work can be hard but once you adapt to the routine it just gets easier. The animals make you so happy that even on more exhausting days you get home content as you feel like you did something valuable. You also have a lot of free time to either relax, study, or see Portugal. I recommend this experience to other Vegans that want to start making an impact, as you learn a lot from the team :-)

O Projecto the shelter is an amazing place that completely changed me and I highly recommend it to everyone. Being in an the shelter is a wonderful thing to experience, you learn a lot about the animals that live there and how special they are. Chiara is an amazing host, the house I stayed in was great, the lunches they provided were so good and the hours at the shelter were great, time literally flew there. Thank you also to Sharna, Ale, Daniela, Sandra and all the other amazing people I got to meet there.
