I had a great time at the the guest house. If you do your tasks carefully and try to contribute to the hostel, the host Essam will be very grateful and helps you to have a nice time in Kyoto. I felt welcomed and respected, but helpers who do not do the tasks carefully, may have a different experience. It is mainly 4 hours of work 5 days a week as a group of 3 to 4 people. This includes about 2 to 3 hours of cleaning and 1 to 2 hours of reception. If you stay more than 4 weeks it is likely that you do less cleaning and more reception work. Thank you, Essam, Naoko and staff+ helpers (-:

I had a great time in Guesthouse the guest house thanks to the other volunteers. It was a good experience, the work is really easy and the staff is nice ! The location of the Guesthouse is a bit far from everything. You can be paid for your extra hours if you do evening shifts (but be sure you will get the right amount of money, we had some issues before).

I had a good stay in GHKI overall. There's a lovely park nearby and Kyoto station is only 15 minutes away. The staff are lovely and Essam tries his best, although just make sure you confirm what will happen if you work the evening shift (6 hours instead of 4) because some volunteers got paid, others got days off. The hostel is cosy and clean, you may get the odd bad guest but that's expected. Work shifts are either 9am-1pm (1-2 hours reception, 2 hours cleaning), 11am-3pm (cleaning then sitting downstairs until 3pm) or 3pm-9pm (nightshift). Message me for more details :)

Stayed here for a month and I enjoyed it quite a bit! The team is really nice, friendly and helpful. I was here during low season so we were done quick, but often there were other jobs to do. But even in busy season I think it will be fine since there are other volunteers in addition to the payed staff. Would recommend to do other shifts then the standard 11-15 (you can also earn money if you do longer shifts). Only downside imo is the location. Especially if you do the 11-15 shift it's a bit difficult to do anything since it will most likely be closed by the time you get there.

I had such a great time here! Everyone made me feel so welcome! I made some amazing friends and am sorry to leave. For anyone wondering, the biggest dorms they have have 6 beds. All the beds have dark curtains for privacy. If you're a woman, they'll make sure you're in a female dorm.

Hi, I stayed in the guesthouse for a month. I was able to meet wonderful people. I keep people with whom I have worked in my life. The work is diligent in the details. There are at least two of us doing the shift. I find it a shame that some volunteers "hide" so as not to do the work or at least more slowly so that someone can come and help them. Essam has always been understanding and I am grateful for that. Unfortunately due to unfavorable schedules (11am-2pm) I didn't have time to explore much. Btw lunch break is after work. Hope that helps !

The work at the the guest house is pretty straightforward. Essam tries his best to make everyone feel welcome without pushing too hard. Naoko-San was also always nice and ready to help. I can recommend this guesthouse for anyone who is interested to stay in Kyoto.

I was always happy most of days spending time at the the guest house. I felt welcomed and home. Though, I was little uncomfortable about the schedule in the beginning as I had to work 6 days consequentially. Since I will be staying little bit longer, I was able to work in the evening. It kinda helped me to get more free time. Basically he will give us 8 days off if you work for a month. But it will be randomly given. If you want to change your schedule, you need to swap with others which can be inconvenient. Though, the work was easy. I feel like communication is more necessary.
