This was an amazing experience where I got a front row seat into the host family's life. The work was not difficult but you'll need to be flexible and encouraging- especially if working with the students. The host communicated frequently, the family was lovely, and the students were so much fun to work with. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone that would like to explore Guatemala, improve their Spanish, experience different ways of life, and meet amazing people!

I had a really good time here! The place wasn't easy to find but after a little bit of time it worked. Daniel asked me always if everything okey and also when ever he had a new task. Daniel has a really big heart and a lot of nice ideas in his head! I think the communication with Daniel's wife would be better when my Spanish skills were better :D but I learned a lot of new Spanish words! So I can recommend this place when you are flexible and like to learn Spanish and learn a lot of the culture in Guatemala. And yes the key is: communication!! It worked out here :)

I had a great time here. The family is kind and the kids are super funny! The work was easy. Helping around the house with cleaning, upkeep at their store and if groups came in for a demo, translating. They were good about honoring work hours and if there was a different task, they always asked me if I was willing. They do not have traditional western showers, but I didn't mind that. If anything not having a hot shower in the mornings helped me wake up.

We were teaching english to 4th grade, 5th grade, and adults. All at different times and days, so you have to be flexible with the classes. The content we were supposed to teach was confusing to differentiate and took us a couple classes to get comfortable. The food was delicious and the family is nice. We were able to experience their culture and share some of ours. Other jobs included dishes and cleaning the store. Overall we enjoyed our time but you will need to be very flexible with your time and ready to work at different hours everyday.

Staying with Daniel and his family has been an incredible experience. You are involved in a super authentic Guatemalan daily life and in a great project (the school and the tienda). The work can easily be done and the students were so nice and welcoming! The work hours weren't always very clear and you need to ask for your days off. But whenever I wanted to do an activity outside of work they were flexible about it. Also the food is delicious - you will learn to love tortillas :) - and it's a great place to practice Spanish. Gracias por todo 🙏🏼

The town & mission is beautiful, but job requires to be VERY flexible. Tasks & meal time often change without communication. Important to keep in mind that facilities are very simple & you are comfortable with animals that try to take your food & sleeping/showering in the cold. note there are no locks on any doors, so do not bring items you don't want to lose. The host will not be helpful and tell you the place is public if items go missing. I did not feel welcomed by the host at times and he can be rude/demanding, but the daughters and mother were always nice. Cooking was great!

waw, but you was not working the 4 hours complete, you was here like visitor no helper. Thanks for your opinion,
I got not happy when I saw that you were checking your phone, while everyone was working. Communication is easy, wash dishes, help in the kitchen, and do a little cleaning and you didn't do that. The other visitors come and do all this without being told every day. A thousand apologies for accepting in our project, you did not come well concentrated to work, you only came to walk and see the town, they forget where you left your things. But thank you very much for coming to know the women's project.

Staying with this host/family you get to see a different way of living and I really appreciated the family letting us into their life. They are also very flexible with the workhours👍🏻Everyone in the family works a lot and sometimes we were just the volunteers at the house. This gave me a feeling that they truly trust the volunteers. In the beginning I wasn't quite sure where to start but I bet that if I asked again they'd given more instructions😌 We came up with things to do on our own as well. One other thing I loved were the animals! This place is great for practising your Spanish too👐🏻

San Juan La Laguna is really pretty, delicious food, great place to visit. Unfortunately I didn't experience the same with this host, consider before coming that there are two dogs that are not friendly and a cat that will jump to the table and will try to eat your food. The room wasn't cleaned, not clean bed sheets. They respected the hours of work, the food portions are little and there's not hot water so taking a shower is a challenge as the place it's really cold.
