Vanguards the hostel is a small hostel close to the city but in the middle of the countryside. Surrounded by nature, rivers, lakes, and mountains. Totally recommend it if you want to disconnect from the noise of the city. Kai is an amazing host; he cooks like a pro (even if he denies it), makes sure that you and his guests are having a great experience, and gives great advice on what to do during your free time. I got to teach (and I truly enjoyed it), did housekeeping, and adventure myself into painting a quote in the kitchen! It was a lovely experience where I learned a lot about Japan.

An amazing experience! Kai was so accommodating and easy to work with. He happily showed me around the town and I was able to get to know some people in the community. The work was reasonable, classes were enjoyable & his students very friendly. Plenty of nature & hiking trails around the hostel. Kai also coaches boxing which was heaps of fun. I will definitely be coming back here :)

I enjoyed my stay at the hostel, Kai was kind and welcoming to me. Although the working hours were fair, I felt as if the work itself was not exactly what agreed upon, since it mostly consisted in plastering a room walls. Also the work hours are spread out throughout the day so it can be hard to schedule activities around it. I really enjoyed talking to Kai's students, The classes consist mostly of just conversation, there's no specific topic or structure to it. Although Sagamiko is not very big itself, very rich in nature and it really grew on me.

Awesome! I spent 2 weeks at the hostel, mainly working on building renovations; Kai was great to work with and always open to ideas. There were also the usual hostel duties, cleaning/making beds, which was straightforward. We also ran English classes and Kai really lets you take charge! During time off, there were beautiful hiking trails, boxing training in the mornings, and some small community events. He also took me to a lovely onsen and dropped me off at the station on my last day! I highly recommend this place if you want to experience small community and nature in rural Japan!

Kai was so welcoming and accomodating from the get-go, and he really made my stay an enjoyable one. Kai is such a kind and fun person, and I will forever cherish the time I spent there. It also was the perfect escape from my usual city life. I really enjoyed exploring the area and interacting with the locals, especially through the classes. The work, in itself, was also very chill. Really really recommend this place for people looking to get out of the city and connect more with Japanese locals and nature. Really recommend Kai as a host as well :))

Kai made me feel so welcomed into his home. He was great at communicating what was needed of me and gave me plenty of time to rest and explore. He showed me around the area and took me out a few times to explore places I was interested in visiting. I love to cook so when I would cook meals he would wash dishes for vice versa. I enjoyed my experience so much that I'll be returning before I end my trip in Japan! The people who visit the hostel are so kind and I enjoyed the conversations I had with the guests. Teaching English was also a blast, he really lets you be in charge of the lesson plan!

It was a wonderful experience, in a traditional Japanese house on the banks of the river, with space to exercise and a sauna🍃 Kai was a very caring host, the daily tasks were carried out equally with him, in terms of cleaning, cooking and English classes. I really recommend this experience especially if you are looking for a connection with nature and with the people of Sagamiko through English classes🤗

Kai was incredibly welcoming and made me feel right at home from day one. The tasks were super easy, and there was plenty of free time to relax and enjoy the beautiful nature around the property. I loved working together to make meals—it made everything feel more fun and connected. The English students were all so kind, and the classes were really easy to jump into. He went above and beyond to help me find my way to my next destination as well. Overall, I'd totally recommend this to anyone looking to escape and experience the beauty of Japan!

It was exactly what I needed! Such a beautiful and peaceful place. I enjoyed every moment there, and Kai was very respectful and attentive. The work involved cleaning the house every day from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., except on days off. Additionally, three times a week, I held a 2-hour conversation class with some local people, usually from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Meals were provided, and we took turns—whoever cooked, the other would clean the dishes. Overall, the work was easy and enjoyable. I am really thankful 😊

Kai is incredibly kind and the location of his home is beautiful. Teaching English was enjoyable and the students were fun and always willing to learn. I loved the sauna and river, also taking advantage of golf net and outdoor gym. Definitely recommended to visit Kai and would be happy to go back!
