The Valley House Hostel & Bar

The Valley House Hostel & Bar is on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way. Our historic Victorian house is located on scenic wooded grounds close to Blue Flag beaches. We have a Woodland Faerie Trail and a beautiful lake on our grounds. The music sessions, conversation and pool table in our friendly pub will keep you happy in the evenings. Our courtyard is a lovely place to sit out and enjoy the fresh air.

In the high season we have a great international team of staff along with some volunteers. We work hard and play hard here on Achill Island! Our traditional pub is busy with guests from all over the world each summer and we enjoy great music sessions in our little pub all year round. In the low season it's quieter but there's still plenty to do and a nice atmosphere here in The Valley House.

I had a great time. Pat, Alice and the others volunteers were amazing and made my first experience really special. Work hours are respected but if you have any specific needs Pat will try to help you. I also had time to stroll around and because the Valley is in an island surrounded by lake it’s really peaceful. If you want to visit the rest of Ireland maybe it’s not the best because it will take a lot of time to go everywhere.The hostel even hosted events like a science circus and a Christmas dinner with locals from the island and you can talk with some of them every week at the pub

It was my first experience as a volunteer, and The Valley House was a great place to start. I met wonderful people who made the experience incredible. Pat and Alice are really kind, and the tasks matched what I was told. Achill Island is a beautiful and peaceful place.

I stayed for one month in November at the Valley House and I wish I would have stayed longer. Pat and Alice are so nice and I always felt cared for and felt free to come to them with any problems, which there were none. We were provided with all the food we needed, so we could cook for ourselves. The work was easy and the hours as agreed upon. I really enjoyed the calm rhythm of the island (mind you in november) and meeting the locals at the pub. Also shoutout to my fellow volunteers, they were amazing and obvioulsy were a big part of my amazing time there.
I hope to come back soon!

This was my first ever experience volunteering abroad and I couldn't have chosen a better place. Achill Island is a magical place that cannot be simply described in words, it has so much to offer - the nature there is absolutely stunning, locals are one of the friendliest people I've ever met in my life and the Valley House itself is a beautiful place full of history, it is a blend of youthful joy and mature comfort. Pat and the team were amazing, the hours were always respected and planned ahead for each week. I'm very much grateful for this experience and for all the people I met 🫶
