The Cuckoo's Nest Hostel & Bar

Hoi An is a magical place with so much to do and see around. It is almost unanimously traveler's favourite place in Vietnam, if not SEA.

The Cuckoos Nest Hostel has just been awarded the "Best New Hostel In Asia" meaning that working here allows you to be part of something special, and know you are part of the best experience traveler's are creating.

Having spent 12 years of my life traveling, and spending most of that time living inside hostels myself, I understand the desire to volunteer. I understand that sometimes its nice to put down your backpack for a little longer than 3 days and really get to know a place and its people. I understand the importance of volunteers and the role they play in creating atmosphere, setting a friendly welcoming tone, fostering connection and ultimately providing a home away from home for so many people.

I also understand that this experience needs to be beneficial to my volunteers. They need to be learning skills, learning about themselves, have a safe and welcoming environment, feel important to the hostel and above all need to be enjoying themselves.

I am above all a traveler myself, who after over a decade of traveling decided to hang up my backpack and create the kind of place that I always would have loved to stayed in myself. The hostel is run in two distinct parts. I have full time Vietnamese staff (who are the best staff i could ever ask for) who help me run the reception, bookings, check in's, cleaning, laundry and all other matters of "official business". And then I have the bar and social area where we run events and games each night. The bar and even area is run by myself and my wonderful volunteers. I have anywhere between 3 and 5 volunteers at a time (depending on schedules and people leaving and going and overlapping). By nature, all of my volunteers must be friendly, welcoming, fun and inclusive people. My volunteer's can be expected to be treated with respect, and in a true sense that we are in this together. I listen to my volunteers and often seek out advice on things. I also understand that living and working and drinking in the same space over long periods of time can be a daunting or uncomfortable thought for some. Be assured that I take bullying, sexual misconduct, harassment, or uncomfortable behaviour from other volunteers, or guests very seriously. You should, and always will feel safe and looked after here.

It was my first volunteering experience and it was incredible. The work is fun and includes running the bar, socializing with guests, organizing evening activities, and taking people out for the pub crawl in town.
Thanks to this experience, I was able to improve my English and meet travelers from all over the world.
Hoi An is also one of those cities that makes you want to stay longer – so this experience is just perfect.

Volunteering at the cuckoo’s nest was one of the best experience in my life.
The staff was amazing, the volunteers were really kind and fun, and the place was just magical.
If you want to meet people, have fun while having a great work experience (which was not easy sometimes 😅), then the cuckoo’s nest is waiting for you !
Thanks again for this wonderful experience :)

I had a really great time volunteering at the Cuckoo's nest.
Ellen is the best manager, she's nice, flexible and always here to help you. The receptionnists are the sweetest, and if you have any question they just know everything on everything.
The job is really fun, it's mostly serving drinks, making cocktails and talk with the guests.
The staff house is nice, the beds are really comfy, even if the bedroom needs to be fixed a little (but it was suppose to be just right after I left).
If you want to improve your social skills, and work with amazing people in a vibrant city, go for it!

Volunteering at this hostel bar was an amazing experience. It was a great way to meet fellow travellers, and the team was incredible—supportive and fun to work with. We all became really close, making the job enjoyable and the time fly by. If you’re looking for a place to pause your travels for a month or two, this is the perfect spot. I’ll definitely miss my time here!
PS get ready to learn some Dutch when you work here.

Cuckoos Nest is a great hostel to meet many international travelers, learn about bartending and feel like home on the other side of the world!
The other volunteers made me feel included and part of the group since the first day. Every few days we did some activities as a group and living together in the volunteer house made us a big friend group.
Besides the other volunteers I met many other travelers and going out to Hoi An’s city centre with the guests is so much fun. I got more confident in speaking English and the work is not too hard.
Bartending and running the events is so much fun.
