Quinta dos Sarilhos

Come join a 5 acre farm in stunning central Portugal! This unique building was designed by its previous owner, an architect who poured as much love into the house as he did into the surrounding grounds, which feature a working vineyard, fruit trees, a vegetable garden, a fish pond and a small stream. As if the tranquil environment wasn’t relaxing enough, the property also benefits from a swimming pool, sauna and boules court. We’re joined on the property by some furry (and feathered) friends - 2 sheep, 10 chickens, a dog and a cat.

Home to the Zêzere river, the Leiria district is known for its river beaches and waterfalls and the quinta is a great jumping off point for many scenic hikes and cycle rides - bikes are available to borrow for all workawayers. There is a great community feel to the local area with the nearby café/bar hosting regular events, music nights and workshops.

I'm originally from the UK, but moved to Lisbon in 2022, and then to the quinta in March 2025. I previously worked in the charity sector and still occasionally do some project management work in this field. When I stumbled across this beautiful property I knew immediately it was where I wanted to lay down roots, and work with a likeminded community to create a welcoming, relaxing, sustainable space. I'm a musician with an array of instruments at the quinta, so we're looking forward to hosting regular jams. I'm also a circus fanatic with a passion for juggling and aerial - at some point planning on building an aerial rig to practice silks and corde lisse and host circus retreats - watch this space! We have some beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces to practice yoga. We have bikes available to use for all workawayers to explore the surrounding area. We have basic gym equipment including a pull up bar, bench and adjustable dumbbells. There is a great community feel to the local area with the nearby café/bar Pachamama hosting regular events, music nights and workshops. We are always keen to learn and look forward to drawing on the culture and experience workawayers bring with them!

This was my first time using Worldpackers and I couldn’t have asked for better. The tasks were very diverse going from cooking, to sewing, building things, and taking care of the animals which allowed me to learn tons while also keeping things interesting.
It definitely felt good to slow down while also doing some hikes, swimming, going to the sauna, listening to live music, and even going out to the local vegetarian/vegan restaurant.
Nathan was a very welcoming, fun, and flexible host who will definitely be missed.
(Also can definitely recommend as a solo female traveler:)

I had a lovely time at the Quinta. Nathan is a kind, wonderful host and I had a lot of fun spending time with him. The hours are flexible and the tasks change day to day which keeps things interesting. The volunteer space is very cozy! I would also recommend this as a safe place for solo female travellers :) I was able to do weekend trips to Lisbon and Porto, as well as enjoying the town nearby. 10/10 experience, hope to come back again.

My time at the Quinta was amazing! We didn't have any guests staying beyond the first couple days so the time consisted of improvement projects for the Quinta. Time beyond that was so relaxing and fun. Nathan is a wonderful host and super flexible, kind and supportive. This was exactly the experience I needed for my first time doing Worldpackers. I learned lots about what it takes to run a farm, gained skills in building, jam making, etc and got to meet the locals in town. Paige and I even made weekend trips to Porto and Lisbon. I highly recommend and will miss my time here :)

Joining Nathan at the Quinta was the best decision I could have made. I was shown in so many ways it was exactly where I was meant to be, and you will be too. Not only is the space beautiful, unique, and comfortable to stay in, but I was alongside so many great people. Although I was at first worried about it being too secluded I loved getting to experience the small town vibe and had a great balance of nature, connection, and traveling into nearby cities. I really enjoyed everything I was able to help with from cooking, to gardening, to preparing rooms for guests, and taking care of animals.

I had a magical month at Quinta dos Sarilhos! The work was varied and fulfilling, I loved spending time with the animals, in the garden and kitchen. Though the busiest man I’ve ever met, Nathan was always positive, supportive, and communicative. The local community is welcoming, and I formed a Friday tradition of visiting to local vegetarian bar/restaurant for live music. The countryside and nearby rivers are beautiful. This is a perfect place to volunteer if you’re keen on slow, intentional living. Thank you Nathan for the opportunity and friendship. I’ll be back!
