Middle Campscott Farm

Our farm consists of 88 acres; all permanent pasture (except a small wood and kitchen garden). WE farm livestock - about 200 sheep, about 20 Devon cattle, some poultry and a retired sow. We are licenced by the Soil Association and follow their organic standards. We sell our produce in the local Ilfracombe Farmers' Market and on line. Our sheep flocks are kept for the production of lamb and mutton, and also wool, knitting yarn and felted "sheepskins". Our cattle herd is registered with the Devon Cattle Breeders' Society and consists of pedigree polled Red Ruby Devons. They are mainly sold as pedigree breeding stock but we occasionally have a steer killed for beef. We have planted a small orchard of fruit trees, mainly apples, cider apples, pears and perry pears. We have also recently re-introduced beekeeping to our activities and currently have three beehives. Our general aim is to farm in a humane and sustainable way, restore and maintain the traditional landscape features of the North Devon AONB, and be as self sufficient as possible. We are involved in the environmental management schemes provided by The UK Government. We can demonstrate organic pasture management, animal husbandry, hedge laying. We are in an area classified as being of "outstanding natural beauty" (https://www.northdevon-aonb.org.uk/) and in the "North Devon Biosphere" (https://www.northdevonbiosphere.org.uk/) near the sea and good coastal walks (see links below for photos; or look us up on Google Maps, satellite view.).

We are a family farm. Karen and Lawrence have farmed here since 1992. Lawrence does most of the farm work and Karen does the felting and marketing. Before we left London in 1992, we were architects. Our son Bennet also lives on the farm. He helps on the farm, has a history degree from the Open University and works part time as a library assistant. We value and appreciate help from our volunteers; we treat them as members of the family and hope that they will find their stays enjoyable and informative.

Overall I really enjoyed my experience at Middle Campscott Farm. With seven people, all of whom are lovely, it was a full house. It can be diffficult to get around at times with the closest town being an hours walk away but the beach is a 20 minute walk which is lovely. There are no set hours or tasks so finding a routine is important. For me this was feeding the lambs, cleaning dishes, checking the cattle etc. But, it could be different depending on what needs to be done. It's a different but wonderful way of life filled with animals and wonderful homemade food.

This experience was a great challenge for me, as it was my first time encountering a lifestyle so different from my own. It has helped me learn more about myself and adapt to new situations. I truly appreciate the opportunity to have been part of this family. Karen, Lawrence, and Benet are kind and welcoming people. They taught me how to knit and shared some recipes, guided me in making chutney. The dogs, Patch, Meg, and Jet, are an excellent team when it comes to herding sheep and watching over the birds. without forgeting the cats, some are very affectionate!!!

I had a wonderful time at Middle Campscott Farm. The Wrights were very welcoming and each had their own charm to them. The meals were always amazing. My stay was both a learning experience and a relaxing stay in the countryside. The balance between work and leisure can vary from day to day but was always comfortable.
There are plenty of scenic walks around and the sea is only about a 30 minute walk away from the house.

While working at Middle Campscott, I was made to feel very welcome by the hosts Karen and Lawrence, involved in all activities on the farm, including animal care, gardening and helping inside preparing meals. A great place to go for a retreat into beautiful North Devon scenery. Overall a really fun experience to have, definitely recommend to travellers who want to experience life outside of the big cities

I spent 6 weeks on Middle Campscott Farm. Lawrence, Karen and Bennet made me feel welcome and settled in so quickly, and it truly felt like I was a part of the family. Tasks varied every day, with enough time off to explore nearby areas. As an agricultural student, I learned a lot from Lawrence about local farming, and he even organised experiences for me with other farmers in the area. I would recommend this stay especially if you are interested in the agricultural sector, but also if you have an open mind to learn or want to make a genuine human connection. I'll miss them all dearly!

Thanks Herli, you were a splendid helper, with your agricultural knowledge and background! But above all you became a friend and quasi family member. We very much enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again.
