English Homestay Gia Lam Hanoi

Because we offer more than just accommodation — we offer a true cultural exchange.
At our homestay, volunteers don’t just help, they become part of a family. You’ll live, cook, and learn with locals and other travelers, while helping Vietnamese students improve their English through real-life conversations and activities.

In return, we provide:

Free accommodation and wifi, kitchen, fridge

A welcoming, social environment

Opportunities to explore the local area with local guidance

A meaningful way to make a difference through language and friendship

If you’re looking for more than just a bed — if you want connection, culture, and contribution — this is the place for you!

We are a small, passionate team of educators, travelers, and local hosts who believe in the power of cultural exchange. Our homestay is run like a family — warm, relaxed, and full of laughter. I (the host) have years of experience working with both local students and international volunteers. Many of our team members speak English and love learning about different cultures. How we treat volunteers: Volunteers are treated as part of the family — not just guests or workers. We value your time, your effort, and your stories. You’ll have a clean and safe place to stay, and plenty of support from us every day. We are always open to your ideas, and we’re here to make sure your experience is both meaningful and fun. Whether you're helping with English practice, joining family meals, or exploring the neighborhood, you'll always feel welcomed, respected, and appreciated.

The experience was really enriching and made me feel I was contributing substantially to change our student’s lifes (all adults or college students). It has a very collaborative atmosphere and everyone in the staff and teaching team is very lively and kind, eager to share more about their culture and local history, Thang is even a tourist guide! In my experience the classes happen in a very free style so the main purpose was for the students to have an international setting to gain confidence in their speaking skills and expand vocabulary. I am very grateful for the time we spent together.

This place was great. It is in a calmer, less touristy part of the city with incredible restaurants and cafes. You can really get closer to Vietnamese culture and spend time with locals. The local teachers are very kind and social. Teaching is fun, and you have a lot of free time. Perfect if you want to work during the day or explore the city. The dorms are split into boys' and girls' rooms, and there are classrooms for you to work in. Overall, I recommend!

I would say this is not a bad experience, I am American that is Viet so I know both sides of stories. Of course everything could always done better but I like it that they treated me very well the first day, there is also someone who is knowledgeable about tour around Ha Noi.

But I would say that there is no meal provided of course and ya would eat around town which is for University students so it's not bad, and by the way it's next to biggest university in Vietnam so I am happy to eat around here.

Overall, I would love to come back if someone need me to stay longer.

Volunteering at the English homestay was an amazing experience! The students were eager to learn, and teaching felt more like chatting with friends. The host David was warm and welcoming. I learned so much about Vietnamese culture while helping others practice English. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a meaningful and fun cultural exchange!

About homestay, It's one hour bus ride from the city center, and 30 mints by Grab bike.
Nice Cafes and restaurants are around here.
The schedule is pretty flexible like free-talk with Vietnamese people in the evening.

I loved spending time here. I met people from all over the world, had fun, went out to eat and drink, and got the chance to teach and learn with the kids and families who come to the homestay. It was a meaningful and memorable experience. I’ll definitely miss it!
