Elephant Care Relief Foundation

Our project's sole purpose is to care for the welfare and well being of domesticated elephants, taking them away from industries that exploit them with cruel practices.

We rent elephants that are made to work in the logging industry, back riding projects, and unethical tourism projects. Forced to work day and night, with limited food and water, chained up when not working, constantly physically abused, these are the conditions they face. We also work with the mahouts (elephant's carers) training them to guide the elephants using kind practices that don't involve shouting and physical abuse.
Rehabilitation can be a lengthy process but it's extremely rewarding to witness the changes in the Mahout-Elephant relationship.

Ours is an all-round approach that ensures we are successful in our long-term objective of giving the elephants a happy life and ensuring they don't pose a threat to the local community.

While making sure the elephants get enough food and water, we also cover the costs of medicines and veterinary care. Mental health is an increasingly important aspect of our project also, making sure that their mind is at ease, living how a wild animal should be living, and cleansing their mind of the torturous practices they have had to face in the past.

We want to serve as an inspiration for others, and we are currently saving towards Amarasiri's dream of buying a massive plot of land, filled with lots of elephants, where elephants could roam as freely as possible. It's a massive endeavor, and can only be achieved by your help.

Help us make it reality and volunteer with us!

You will be welcomed in our home - we are a family of 5. You will have your own room in a seperate accommodation, but are very welcome to join us at our house for tea/coffee or some games in the evening. We will prepare your meals and are happy to share as much or as little time with you as you'd like. Your happiness, mindest and contentedness is of our highest concern.

My time in the Elephant Care Relief Foundation was exactly what I wanted my experience to be.
I was able to learn about elephants in Sri Lanka and feel I was really contributing for their well-being. And, at the same time, I had the opportunity to meet both local and international people.
The hosts and the team are very nice people and try their best to make you feel comfortable. They will show you around and teach you about their culture.
Last but not least, the project is a really beautiful and meaningful. The work they do for the elephants is incredible. I'm very happy I was part of it! :)

This is a great experience to get in touch with locals in a non touristic area and learn about elephants conditions in sri lanka. Amarasiri and Nera just want the best for you! All the ECRF staff is really nice and you won't have any problem and if you will, they will help you anyway. So just be open, respectful and book for this experience!

Nera and his family were extremely welcoming in every way! Their first priority is to make sure the volunteers are comfortable. I slept at an hotel across the street of the family's house. The room was primitive, but had all I needed.

Lots of elephant projects call themselves 'ethical', but this one really was! They rent elephants away from where they are exploited and let them roam around freely in the woods and live their best life. Tourists can come and watch the elephants from a distance, but the elephant decides when and where to go, we only follow.

Thx for the best experience!

I really enjoyed my stay. The familiy put all their time and love into their project and elephant Mali (Number of elephants depends on donation from visitors and volunteers) If you want to learn about elephants, their Story in Sri Lanka and the surrounding then is this the right place to stay. If you are expecting to touch and hug the giant animals, you should go to an unethical tourist spot. But the elephant is in her natural way most beautiful anyways.
I loved the mornings walking in the forest and observing Mali in the River. The education day was very interesting too.
The familiy lovely.

It was a great experience with great values, the whole team was very welcoming and took great care to ensure we were happy.

I really felt like I was on holiday and that I was only financing the project, even though we helped out from time to time.

It was a wonderful time with the team and the elephants. I would recommend
