Barbarossa Hostel

Barbarossa Hostel, situated in a 150 year old warehouse building, offers its guests stylish, peaceful and centrally located accommodation in the historic centre of Nijmegen.

Located in a quiet square just off the main shopping street, the hostel makes a perfect base to enjoy the contemporary and youthful atmosphere the city has to offer.

Nijmegen is located close to the German border in the province of Gelderland, and is the oldest city in the Netherlands, dating back to the Roman Empire. Hosting a large university and several further education colleges, the city is full of students.

Nijmegen has always been known for its active political youth scene, which means you will likely be welcomed by open-minded and friendly individuals.

The city has access to numerous parks, green areas, trendy pubs, cafés with live music, concert halls and nightclubs. Large festivals are often held in Nijmegen, the most famous of which is the ‘Vierdaagse’ (Four Day March). This walking event is held together
with the “Zomerfeesten” (Summer festivities) and attracts around a million visitors of all ages.

Wintertime is typically windy, rainy and grey, with the occasional bit of snow and some beautifully crisp, sunny days. The perfect time to curl up with a book, watch a movie, or play some board games.

We like to think of our small hostel as one big family where everybody has the space to relax and do their own thing, but also participate to make Barbarossa a better place together. Common spaces include a kitchen, dining and living room, an outside roof terrace. We are looking for adventurous, open-minded and energetic volunteers to join our team. If you are looking to stay for the medium to long-term in a place like Nijmegen, volunteering at Barbarossa is an ideal opportunity to meet people from different walks of life, to discover Dutch culture and to have a great time in this historic and vibrant city. We don’t have preference on gender or sexual orientation, everybody is welcome. ☺ Speaking Dutch and/or German is a plus, but not mandatory.

My experience at Barbarossa was amazing ! I made great friends and they made my days in Nijmegen :) At works like cleaning, HKP and the reception, these are simple and easy to understand. If I don’t know something, Junior and Linda helped me a lot!! Also, Junior told me a lot of things about Hostel. This experience helps me to make own hostel in a future! My volunteer at Barbarossa was my first experience at WorldPackers, and it was amazing.

The people at the hostel were so kind and helpful. The hostel was cozy and felt like a home. The hours are reasonable and the three days off are very good for someone who wants to travel while there.

And Nijmegen is incredible. It's a small town, yet filled with pubs, restaurants and shops. There is a nightlife and the old architecture is beautiful and well maintained.

My time at Nijmegen and Barbarossa will always have a special place in my heart.

I had an amazing experience at Barbarossa! As my first volunteering experience, i couldnt have asked for more. The manager Eric was very welcoming, the owner Joep was very accessible and worried about our well being at the hostel. The team of volunteers was also really nice, we made some good friends and got to know some people from all around the world. The town is very pleasant and charming, with lots of pubs, bars and parks. Its also close to other amazinh cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Köln and Antwerp! I highly recommend this experience!

It was a very good experience, it is a city in the interior of the Netherlands that has very good infrastructure. I worked as a night shift, the hours were a bit busy and I couldn't enjoy the city on the weekends. However, the flexibility allowed me to work remotely for another job despite the internet not being very good. Another point of attention was that there was a lot of Brazilian language, which hindered my plan to practice English a little.
