BAN ME RETREAT

Located in the heart of the vast Buon Ma Thuot plain within the Central Highlands, Buon Ma Thuot in Daklak province is known for its Ede villages showcasing beautiful, traditional indigenous architecture and shady, green streets. This melting pot of over 30 Vietnamese ethnicities creates a rich culture. Buon Ma Thuot offers a culinary adventure with dishes from across Vietnam. Explore village markets, small and large markets bustling with products from the entire Central Highlands. Just 20 kilometers away, you can find the most beautiful waterfall in the Central Highlands, nestled beside volcanic caves. Alternatively, immerse yourself in a pristine rainforest ecosystem.
We believe that there is nowhere else in Vietnam to own these things and this is a great chance for volunteers to explore more...

Born and raised in Buon Ma Thuot, My Ngoc went to Saigon for university studies in restaurant and hotel management. After six years of success in sales & marketing for restaurants, hotels, and other companies, she began to feel the negative effects of air, noise, and food pollution in the bustling city. This realization struck her with particular force after having her first daughter and raising her for three years in Saigon's polluted environment. My Ngoc knew it was time for a change: returning to develop the Central Highlands' economy and raise her family in the peaceful embrace of Buon Ma Thuot. Upon returning to her beloved city in 2016, My Ngoc shifted gears, focusing on trading agricultural products. She also provided consulting and training to young startups, introducing them to sustainable farming practices and improving their commercial negotiation skills. After five years of working within the cultural, economic, and social environment of the Central Highlands, My Ngoc had accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience. This, along with her colleagues, empowered her to invest in her family's land, transforming it into the Banme Retreat project. Banme Retreat is 800 square meters large and includes a small house nestled in a garden of vegetables and multi-layered fruit trees. It's a lovely place to relax and reconnect with nature, offering a base to explore Buon Ma Thuot's many attractions. Over a cup of morning coffee in the fresh garden, a calming afternoon tea, or while roasting potatoes or corn by the fire, reconnect with the simple joys of life. Release the stress of urban life, clear your mind, and rediscover the simple pleasures of life. Share your story with Ngoc, and she'll share hers – the story of her in return and what she has done throughout the five Central Highlands provinces in the past seven years. Thereby, you will gain richer experiences about the culture and people of the Central Highlands, and discover the positive impact you can make on this land. Together, we can create a positive and impactful living community for social development.

Sam is a great host and her family is lovely! Kids are a bliss! It's a nice place, not much to do in the town tho. We left early as the tasks described were not at all what we got and problems with our travel schedules. It was hot days, and that's why we didn't do anything outside the house, but we exclusively took care of the children for hours. The food is delicious, and she takes care of us tho, if you don't mind not doing much is OK, but try to agree 100% on the tasks beforehand and make some planning over it. The stay was comfortable and we made good friends in Vietnam:)

Good homemade food. Stay here if you want a relaxing experience. Our initial plan was to stay a week but we adjusted our plans to 4 days because the description did not = reality. A homestay experience, not a work exchange. In our entire stay, we did about 1.5 hours of work: washing dishes after meals and sweeping our dorm room once. Sammy did a few questionable things like giving us banh mi's with meat in them after promising they were vegetarian and consistently making unwarranted comments about me and my partner. Description says 3 meals/day and we were not given breakfast on 3/4 of them.

I was thrown off because it seems like Sammy doesn't want help at all. When I asked, I was told I'd work in the afternoons, but in the afternoon I was told to go take a nap. Those living there are working hard all day, so it feels bad to sit around. There aren't other forms of engagement offered unless you want to entertain her son. Beyond that, I appreciated Sammy trying to care for me when I was sick. I did get something out of the experience as Sammy will share her stories and her son will try to teach some Vietnamese. I think 15$/day is too much considering how much it's worth in Vietnam.

This experience was a cultural exchange, not a work exchange. Work hours and expectations were not made clear, so we mostly just explored the area and hung out. The property is lovely and the surrounding activities are fun! I would recommend Yok Don National Park to see wild elephants, as well as the coffee museum.

Sammy’s kids are awesome and I really loved playing with them. Sammy did a great job of giving us local cuisine and recommending things to do in the area. However, she would often make comments about myself and my partner, among other things, that felt unwarranted.
