I can not wish for a more wonderful experience than the time I spent in Sarang. Lili took me to the local farmer's market and night market and showed me the most the host and authentic Malay food. She is eager to exchange knowledge and learn from every volunteer. And I was so inspired by her huge passion and dedication to food and this business.

Thank You ever so much to Lili and her mum Popo for their warm welcome ! I have spent 3 wonderful weeks, learning about Peranakan cuisine, helping with the host classes, putting sunshine in clients' plates, what an honour ! Lili pours her heart into everything she does and will always make sure you have everything you need. Very generous soul. If you wish to come help this beautiful project, come with an open heart, the will to help & be flexible. 😊

This is a very cultural experience and a great way to learn about malaysian/peranakan cuisine. I would highly recommend this opportunity to foodies as Lili makes such an effort to show you many food markets and local restaurants. Lili takes great care in explaining her love she puts into designing her dishes and restaurant. Lili, Popo, Linda and other volunteers acted like family to me with all their support when my sister got hospitalized during our stay (from external factor). Hours are more so dependent on the busyness of the restaurant, rather than set working hours. Ask me anything ;)

The 2 weeks passed by fast! I stayed and worked during Chinese New Year and Lili & her family did not treat us any differently than the rest of her family. I highly recommend this for people who have worked in Kitchens before and are used to the fast-pace. The tasks are dependent on business needs (walk-ins, resos, etc.) so you will need to plan your exploring accordingly. There are always areas to help so when restaurant is slow, offer side projects (social media, decorations, etc.) Room felt comfortable and safe. Bring own towel, toiletries, etc. Ask me anything!

Feel like a family since open the door. Really great time I had and could learn a lot too. Lili very positive person and you can talk about everything what's on your heart. You not only learn about local food you also eat fresh and healthy meals.

The expérience was ok for me. I had fun in learning how to cook the host malaysian food. The relationship with my host degraded week after week. I've planned to stay only one week I stayed one month. I started to feel uncomfortable when I've been asked to go to sleep elsewhere for three nights. During my days off I couldn't really rest as all the volunteers had to leave the house early if my host had to go out as well and stay outside until night. Sometimes we worked until 9pm and we couldn't really enjoy hanging out in the city at night as the host closes the doors of her house at 10pm.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed learning traditional Malaysian cooking.

You're aware of our family emergency during your stay, which required some adjustments, including asking you to stay elsewhere for a few nights. I explained the situation and thought you understood. We also did not collect any fee from you due to this. The 10pm rule was clearly stated before your arrival.

Wishing you the best in your future travels.

It was quite an unique and rewarding experience volunteering at Sarang Cookery. There are a lot of ingredients I ate for the first time or knew what it actually was even I've had before. I learnt a lot here not only about the host and Peranakan cuisine but also the local culture and people's life here. Lili and her mother are very caring host who always makes sure we volunteers are comfortable staying here and eat well. I enjoyed talking and joking with Lili a lot. I was lucky all other volunteers were nice people and good cook as well. 😋

Lilli and her mum Popo have a lovely restaurant that is filled with delicious food. The help in the kitchen was fun, they took time to show us how to do things so that we could do them to a good standard. My time here was short but I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about others lives and about Malaysian culture - Lilli takes you to various food places for dinner after the restaurant shuts to try authentic foods as well. The hours aren't too flexible as they depend on how busy the restaurant is so you have to be available from 12-8 for any walk in's is the only downside.

The schedule and tasks about volunteers' duties are not clear. I was expecting to learn about the host and it didn't happen. The volunteering is very boring because the restaurant is empty. Lili seemed nice but then she became very rude with me, for example, we were eating and she made this comment “how can you eat so much?” (For 3 spoons of rice). We went to the farm and she insisted I had to do everything. I ignored the situation, this was my mistake, we have all the right to express -with respect- the things that make us feel uncomfortable, I hope my experience can help new volunteers.
