Con Gaia, la manager, todo fue genial. Sin embargo, otra de las empleadas nos trató mal desde el primer día que llegamos y no nos hizo sentir bienvenidas. Cuando trabajábamos con ella nos mandaba hacer cosas que no estaban acordadas y eran parte de su trabajo. Se nos hizo tan pesado que tuvimos que adelantar los vuelos. Cuando se lo contamos a Gaia lo entendió perfectamente, pero nos tocó seguir trabajando con ella, los dueños no hicieron nada… A pesar de eso, conocimos a mucha gente de otros países y el resto de voluntarios fueron increíbles :)

The hostel was great and the other volunteers really made the experience. The town of matala is lovely small but beautiful and you never really get bored. It's a well equipped place and very easy to spend time here. The manager however seemed to be very unkind towards myself in particular where she would blame and accuse me of things. She made me feel uncomfortable around the hostel and like I was not welcomed. She shouted at me and was verbally abusive numerous times, which other volunteers noticed, over small things or things I was unaware of.

Unfortunately Tom didn't have the right attitude toward the hostel and didn't fulfill the tasks asked, even if repeated multiple times. He simply didn’t care or wasn’t mature enough to understand that there is hard work behind a business, and by his actions he clearly was affecting the reputation of the hostel. It's not acceptable having guests complaining about one of the staff members, nor is leaving the safe open -with the money inside- when finishing the shift, after almost a month volunteering. Tom came for free holidays and totally forgot about the volunteering part. Matala is also a small community and shop owners had complaints about him with his behavior, extremely rude and careless, but also regarding stealing. I would definitely not recommend Tom.

My time at the Matala hostel was good. The manager respects the hours and days you work. The work itself is easy. Crete as a whole is beautiful. I recommend renting a car, if you come here I think it would be good to have a drivers license. I also recommend coming here during the season so end of may through summer. That's when the beach conditions are the best( the water is very pretty clear and blue). This was good for a slower way of living and connecting with nature (hike to red beach)! Honestly there's not much to do in the town but there is a few bars. It's definitely beach bum vibe.

After arriving with the ferry/plane, and wandering into the city, you'll find a beautiful red building in the middle of grey ones : the IntraMuros hostel. You'll be welcomed by one of the volunteers or Hector, the host. This hostel is simple, small and yet have a lot of charm. The work is easy to master if you're organised and welcoming. It's a place of meeting, gathering and good times.

Una gran experiencia, Apollo es una gran persona y es muy comprensivo, el trabajo no es difícil y se adapta a tus habilidades. Ame la isla y el hostal es realmente bonito y divertido, lo recomiendo muchísimo! 😄

Mi experiencia en matala hostel fue maravillosa para ser mi primer voluntariado apollo me recibió super bien y cómodo mi estadía en matala. el trabajo en recepción es super sencillo, tienes mucho tiempo para conocer el lugar y disfrutar de sus paisajes

I've had a great time volunteering at the hostel. It was the first worldpackers experience for me and I felt really safe and welcome. I had a lot of free time and the tasks are really simple and don't contain hard work. The time I was there is was a bit quiet in the hostel sometimes but you can amuse yourself in the city. I would recommend staying here and have a great worldpackers experience on the Crete island.

I believe that working in this hostel makes you understand about the culture in Greece. For me this experience was a part of growing and understanding my self and people around me, working with this family opened my eyes to a lot great things, learn new tasks and making new friends around the world is a great way to learn about the meanings and differences that you can find in this wonderfully place. Mi estancia en el hostel fue genial! solo tuve que estar en recepción y ocuparme de los check in y check out, una tarea muy sencilla la verdad. es muy entretenido estar en el hostel y compartir con los turistas. la isla es muy bonita, pero creo que un mes en heraklion es demasiado tiempo, soy una persona que le gusta cambiar constantemente de lugar, así que 2 o 3 semanas aquí hubiera estado perfecto. Hector es muy flexible con los cambios de horarios o de días libres, y te da la confianza para que tu estadía y tu trabajo sea cómodo. muy buena experiencia:)
