Detalhes
DIY Manager is a long term, seasonal, leadership role (May - August). It is a managerial position which will require you to not just be a carpenter, builder, or tailor, but be the manager of all creative projects, the workshop and its team, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Your team includes yourself and 1-2 other volunteers. We are looking for a DIY Manager for the summer season (May - August) since it is our busiest time, but extensions or longer stays are possible and welcome as this kind of work is actually needed all year round.
You will need to have excellent organisation, delegation, communication and collaboration skills. Although the entire DIY team will work collaboratively and share skills and tasks, what separates you from your team members is your differing levels of responsibilities. As the manager you will be the one with the long term plan and overview in mind, and able to organise everyone, your workshop, and your tasks, to carry everything out effectively. Great physical fitness and previous experience/knowledge of all kinds of DIY and hands on skills are required for this role. Lots of your work will include heavy manual labour! You don't need to be an expert in every area that this role requires, but at least a little bit of previous experience or basic knowledge should be present for each category, as well as the general confidence in using tools and machinery, working with your hands, and learning/researching new skills and practices.
Being part of the managerial circle of Alpe Bognago as a whole means you are stepping into a job where you play a massive role and hold a huge responsibility for the smooth running and success of the entire Organisation; understanding and respecting this is crucial to understanding this entire project.
Atividades & Turnos
Everyday working hours for all volunteers are from 8am-13pm. All tasks should be completed within these 5 hours. Your daily routine will probably depend a lot on the exact projects at hand; most mornings are started with a short debriefing with your team.
Your creative projects will include; basic indoor renovations such as plastering, tiling, wall painting and decorative painting. Indoor and outdoor building projects i.e. last year we built an outdoor patio and a pizza oven. Carpentry projects include fixing up old furniture, as well as making new things from scratch. Sewing projects include; repairs as well as making items from scratch. You need to possess a great amount of creativity, innovation, and willingness to learn, to research, and get to know skills and tools that you might not be familiar with, and step outside of your comfort zone.
We have a material storage shed, an indoor and outdoor workshop, with basic tools and machinery, as well as delegated workspaces. the organisation and upkeep of these spaces will be part of your responsibility.
As DIY Manager, apart from being in the literal workshop space, a large quantity of your time will be used to organise your work and plan, and guiding your team members. Being able to build a detailed overview of your work place and all tasks is essential. It is likely that during work hours you will delegate tasks to team members while you take care of other projects/tasks. According to each team members existing skills and the size of projects, each of you might also take on different independent projects. You will also be in collaboration with the Guesthouse Manager to work collaboratively for fixing and improving guest rooms, as well as with the garden team to assist them in building infrastructure for the garden.
Regras
Working in Bognago also means understanding and adapting to the challenges of its remote off-grid location. Being a 45 min. hike away from civilisation, and another 45 min. drive to the closest shops means a lot of consideration and planning when it comes to your work. You will have to be incredibly sensitive to the lack of convenience of the lifestyle here, as well as our financial situation and very strict budget. Alpe Bognago is a very young volunteer project; our funds are therefore extremely limited - this means instead of buying materials or tools brand new, we first try to reuse and get creative with what we have on the property and make do with what we have.
Working in Bognago has certain limitations that you need to be able to adapt too. Our workshop has very few and basic tools and machinery, and also a very small budget. This means, more than anything, that you have to be creative, solution oriented, and proactive when things aren't easy or straightforward. You will have to find creative ways to still carry out your projects, and not get frustrated when things don't go as planned.
Being one of the department managers in Bognago means we will hold you to a higher standard than short term volunteers. We will ask you to learn the ways of life here faster and better, and we will constantly wish for your initiative and input to make this place and your experience here the best it can be. We need you to have the attitude that you are coming here to work together with us, not wait until you are given instructions. Bognago is built on the values of community, honesty, and respect; respect for each other, your work, your environment. We ask you to take your role here both seriously and joyously, and are ready to share a wonderful summer if we are on the same page.
