Detalhes
The Garden Volunteer Programme offers a hands-on opportunity to contribute to a food-focused, shared Community Garden on a hospitality-focused smallholding in the KZN Midlands. The garden supports a sustainable food source for our staff (including you), guests, and the broader community and forms part of our commitment to regenerative, small-scale food production, as well as an experience for our accommodation guests.
Volunteers join us for a mid-week stay, when the farm and accommodation are quieter, allowing for focused garden work and a more reflective experience. In exchange for volunteer hours, participants are hosted in our fully furnished Boutique Apartments. These are self-catering units; meals are not provided, but each apartment includes a fully equipped kitchen and braai.
The programme relies on mutual respect, clear communication, and personal responsibility. While guidance and oversight are provided by our manager, volunteers are expected to work independently, manage their time responsibly, and contribute meaningfully to the garden’s upkeep and productivity.
Atividades & Turnos
Time Commitment
Volunteers are required to complete a minimum of 16 hours of garden work over four days. These hours can be structured flexibly, for example:
- Four half days (morning or afternoon), or
- Two full working days with two days off
Work schedules should be agreed upon with the manager at the start of the stay and may be adjusted as long as changes have been communicated clearly. Adjustments may also be made depending on seasonal needs or weather conditions.
Daily Activities
Typical garden tasks may include, but are not limited to:
- Research eg. troubleshooting, or checking which vegetables, herbs, or fruits are in season.
- Communicating with the garden manager to request seedlings or supplies.
- Preparing soil and garden beds.
- Planting seedlings and maintaining existing plants.
- Weeding, watering, mulching, composting, and general garden care.
- Harvesting fruits and vegetables for staff and community use.
- Interacting with accommodation guests if they are curious or need harvesting assistance.
Tasks will vary according to the season and the current needs of the garden. While volunteers may be given specific instructions for certain tasks, much of the work requires initiative, observation, and self-direction. Volunteers are encouraged to work thoughtfully, make suggestions, ask questions when unsure, and take pride in contributing to a shared space.
Regras
- Volunteer stints are Monday to Thursday. Volunteers need to vacate the premises over the weekend.
- Communication is key. Make sure you stick to plans made with the manager and communicate clearly if plans need to change.
- A high level of self-motivation is required; volunteers should not expect constant supervision.
- Take care when using tools & be sure to clean and store them after use.
- Accommodation must be treated with care; volunteers are responsible for keeping their apartment clean and tidy.
- Volunteers are responsible for their own meals and groceries.
- Volunteers may harvest food from the Community Garden, but we do not recommend relying on this solely, as harvests are unpredictable. We do not take responsibility for low harvest availability.
- Volunteers are responsible for their own transport.
