My experience at Maikekai was a mix of feelings. On one hand, Tuti and Mati and the other volunteers were really nice. On the other hand I felt like I was really working instead of volunteering. There's no staff at the hostel, just the volunteers, so maybe that's why. For my experience, if you don't talk spanish this is not the best place. Anyway, I feel very grateful for the opportunity and the surf lessons.

Tuve una buena experiencia gracias a los otros voluntarios que hicieron un ambiente muy entretenido y cercano, además de poder haber usado las tablas y así aprender a surfear No conocí a los dueños pero sentí que faltaba cariño por el hostal y huéspedes, ya que la limpieza del hostal y la recepción dependen 100% de los voluntarios, habían utensilios en muy mal estado, sábanas rotas, etc. Además, me parece que la esencia del voluntariado es poder estar presente con los huéspedes, sociabilizar y hacer actividades, pero los turnos no lo permitían ni tampoco parecía ser relevante

El voluntariado al que aplicaste se trata sobre limpieza y recepción.
Por supuesto que puedes hacer actividades con los huéspedes, lo que no se te permitió es que te pongas a hacer yoga/ejercicio en medio de tu turno de cinco horas en el cual debias estar en recepción por si llegaba un check in, ni hablar de que todavia faltaban cosas por hacer.
Nosotros estamos decepcionados de ti, te fuiste sin despedirte después y dejaste tablas con dings sin reparar.

La casa fue mi primera experiencia de voluntariado y me gustó el lugar, los dueños te tratan bien, las tareas son simples y si no se sabe algo siempre hay alguien disponible a ayudarte. Sin embargo, el hostel tenía problemas con chinches de las camas, desde el primer día que llegué. Después de preguntar de hacer algo, hicieron una fumigación de algunos minutos y el día después las chinches estaban todavía en el hostal. No hicieron otra fumigación, sino, pusieron veneno ellos mismos, por este problema tenía que terminar mi voluntariado antes de lo concordado.

We wonder what do you mean by “ they fumigated only for few minutes”. We called a fumigation company and they fumigated the place, then the product stayed for hours.
There are no bed bugs in our place since you left.

Maria and mati never greeted me or said goodbye, they would often not be at their shifts so guests would come to us off shift with needs, and they provided almost no training then got frustrated when things were done wrong. The hostel has almost no security, I was robbed of 400 dollars and an expensive camera and they never even mentioned it to me. There were cockroaches, raccoons, and so many ants and spiders in/around the house because doors are left open all day. The water frequently stopped working, and the showers and toilets barely worked. It was nothing as promised.

We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy the experience. Regarding the theft you mentioned, we’re truly sorry it happened, but it’s important to clarify that you left your key on top of your locker.

Maria and Matias were amazing hosts, always trying make our experience the best it could be. The free surf lesson is a big plus, and they took us surfing again with them multiple times after that - you only had to rent a board. the guest house is a small surf hostel that was pretty chill during my stay in the green season, but I had a good time with the other volunteers. That being said, I really enjoyed my stay, so don't let that keep you from applying!

Excelente experiencia de aprendizaje. Desde el primer dia me sentí acompañado y bienvenido en la locación. Conocí Costa Rica, tambien personas increibles, amigos, lugares y aprendí a surfear. Los anfitriones super abiertos a compartir conmigo y ayudarme a tener una linda experiencia en el hostel. Super recomendado venir a voluntariar aqui

Juan Pablo has been a great volunteer at Mai Ke Kai Surf House.
He has discipline, is well-organized, easy going and capable of solving problems and socializing really fast and kindly with guests. I highly recommend hosting Juampi.

I really enjoyed my time at the guest house 😊 Mati and Maria are great hosts, the house is super cosy and I met lots of great people there. The work is easy and fun. I got a good introduction on my first day and a schedule with all my work hours. But if I wanted to switch something it wasn't a problem at all 😊 I also got the opportunity to learn how to surf and really enjoyed that I would definitely recommend the place :)

The guest house is a beautiful place to volunteer at, is situated in the middle of Tamarindo so you can visit the town and go to the nearby beach walking. The job is easy, the onwers are kind and will help you with whatever you need! Tamarindo is a turisty place, so if you like a beach town with lots of bars, restaurants and people this is the place for you.

I really enjoyed my time at the guest house! The hostel is quite small which creates a nice homely atmosphere. The work was okay and the town is really cute. I also really appreciate the opportunity to learn the basics in surfing! Definitely recommend if you want something homey and calm.
