Unlimited Lights Academy

We are an academy with a 20 year history located in the center of Taipei. While we are not a monastic temple, we do have residential monastics and a daily practice schedule or special events that you are welcome to join or may be asked to help with preparing and set up. We focus on Buddhism and Confucianism values and run classes throughout the semester, as well as provide a deep understanding of traditional Chinese culture.

While the main programming is in Mandarin there are English classes (on Wednesday and Sunday) and two Mandarin classes with live English translation (on Monday and Saturday).

Volunteering is about 5-6 hours a day, some light chores, and flexible schedule. We have two options: a two week stay in Taipei or a one week in Taipei and one week on our farm in Dongshi option. We provide homecooked vegan/vegetarian lunch and dinner (breakfast is self serve), and a central location that makes exploration easy.

We are a vibrant community that embraces kindness and Buddhist/Confucian ethics. Our members span various generations, offering a wonderful opportunity to connect with diverse individuals. Additionally, we manage a Organic Farm in Dongshi (2hrs south of Taipei) that offers a longer term more quiet volunteer experience. Many of the staff are dedicated practitioners and volunteers in their own right who not only do administrative work but lead classes online and in person. Most staff members speak English and have been proactive in expanding their understanding of foreign culture. Volunteers to ULA are welcomed into the daily routine here, while your own travel needs are accommodated. We try to find work and have time for discussions that would be valuable for you. While we do have some general ground rules as an all ages academy, we find a lot of joy in learning together, inquiry, and community events. Quite often there are special events (like Yi dancing at the Confucian temple or making Sangha offerings at rural temples) or esteemed visitors and guests or outings. We try to give volunteers opportunities they might not otherwise experience as travelers in Taiwan.

Without sounding too sappy or cliche, my time at ULA was life changing. It changed my perspective on what Buddhism is, introduced me to new concepts, and showed me what community really means. The people are all incredibly welcoming and curious about your own story and experience at the academy. The work expectations are very clear and schedule is flexible if needed, and you have the opportunity to attend classes and contribute your own ideas and projects. Plus, Siti, Shigu, and Hsiao Qing all cook amazing vegetarian food! I'm so happy to have learned here & can't wait to visit in the future!

I had a lovely 3 weeks at ULA, with the first weekend at the Dongshi Farm and the rest at the Taipei Academy.
Work included cleaning of spaces, picking vegetables, translation of educational materials; studying also counts too! I recommend joining the morning meditation as it's a peaceful start to each day.
Be sure to read the document provided by Myogen as it contains all you need to know.
Myogen and team encouraged us to ask questions when in doubt and were open to discussions.
The ULA community truly encourages learning and thinking, and I'm grateful for the meaningful experience :)

I've spent three weeks at the farm and one week at ULA. They were both unique experiences and I can only reccomend them.
If you need a place for silence and reflection, the farm is the perfect place. Don't underestimate this experience if you're not prepare to face some loneliness, if there are no others volunteers you'll be alone most of the time. But don't worry, Mr. and Mrs. Xu are very kind people.
At ULA, I've found a really nice environment, but you'll have to be proactive to really live the experience (try meditation 😊). I'm truly grateful for this month and the people I've met 🙏🏻

Beautiful opportunity for a calm approach to the culture. You'll be working amongst the locals and have a lot of opportunities to learn! Good facilities, the kindest people and a lot of flexibility so you can pursue what you are interested in. Overall love the concept of this organization and am very grateful for this chance to gain some insight. They are genuinely doing good things.
