Kakurinbo Temple Lodging

*PLEASE NOTE THAT WE CANNOT ACCEPT VOLUNTEERS WHO DO NOT HAVE INTERNATIONAL HEATH INSURANCE COVERAGE OR ENOUGH MONEY TO COVER VISITS OR STAYS IN HOSPITAL WHILE WITH US.

A "shukubo" or temple lodging. As such, it is both a business and a Buddhist temple. We offer a rare opportunity to be involved in the everyday running of such a place. Most Japanese, let alone non-Japanese, have never had such an experience.
We are located at the foot of Mt. Minobu, one of the most sacred mountains in Japan. It is surrounded by nature and steeped in Buddhist culture.
Mt. Fuji is not far away, and neither is Tokyo, which can be accessed by express bus in three hours.

Our staff is made up live-in staff and family members, as well employees who come each day from their homes. As country folk, the people are very friendly and remarkably direct. Expect to be treated as family member. The atmosphere is extremely friendly. *Please note that failure to follow the instructions of the staff may result in you being asked to leave.

I have no words to describe this wonderful experience. I immediately felt at home thanks to the friendly Japanese staff. I learned so much about Japanese and Buddhist culture and took part in many amazing activities, including a two-day hike on Mount Shichimen with an overnight stay in a temple, kimono experience, calligraphy, and meditation. Volunteers can also use e-bikes, making it easy to explore the area (and even go out for a cappuccino ☺️). A special mention goes to Junko-san, an incredibly kind and wonderful person.
I hope to return to this beautiful corner of paradise ❤️

This was my first time volunteering and it was fantastic! Both Kakurinbo and its surrounding areas are beautiful and peaceful, the staff and other volunteers are very friendly, kind, helpful and supportive. The job itself is not too difficult, but you have to keep up the pace and not slack off. It took me a few days to get comfortable with the new work environment and new people, but by the end of my stay, everyone felt like family.
I had a wonderful time - the people, work, food, and cultural immersion made it the perfect mix of experiences.
I hope to come back to Kakurinbo someday.

I strongly recommend kakurimbo, i felt very welcomed, you have some private space as youll be living apart from the temple, will get an eBike for you to come and go, the food is great, the staff is friendly, every now and then they provide something for everyone to socialize together and increase the community atmosphere. Apply with a mindset of creating purpose because you will be given back proportionately. They also encourage you to learn japonese, so if you’re looking for it this can be a plus. And the most important thing, its a legit cultural experience. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! 🤍

Kakurinbo was good to me :)
It is a place to become part of a family. Three communal meals, working side by side and having so much time in the day to explore together makes for a beautifully social experience. Compound this with the relative seclusion of Minobu and you'll end up forming bonds with everybody there.
Having or being willing to learn some Japanese will go a long way as it opens the door to friendships in the community and with local staff.
I was sorry to leave early but would happily have my time again.

Overall, I had a wonderful stay in Minobusan. The work was straightforward & the hours were honored. I loved working/bonding with a large group of fellow traveler-volunteers. Junko-san is lovely and is clearly an ambassador for the community; her ambition is inspiring!

Though it became apparent that he meant well, the volunteer coordinator did the bare minimum to orient and/or guide me throughout the experience. At times, he was difficult to work with; he seemed to have little regard for his attitude/tone of voice. With the right mindset, though, the experience is still happy/rewarding.
