Kakurinbo Temple Lodging

*PLEASE NOTE THAT WE CANNOT ACCEPT VOLUNTEERS WHO DO NOT HAVE INTERNATIONAL HEATH INSURANCE COVERAGE OR ENOUGH MONEY TO COVER VISITS OR STAYS IN HOSPITAL WHILE WITH US.

A "shukubo" or temple lodging. As such, it is both a business and a Buddhist temple. We offer a rare opportunity to be involved in the everyday running of such a place. Most Japanese, let alone non-Japanese, have never had such an experience.
We are located at the foot of Mt. Minobu, one of the most sacred mountains in Japan. It is surrounded by nature and steeped in Buddhist culture.
Mt. Fuji is not far away, and neither is Tokyo, which can be accessed by express bus in three hours.

Our staff is made up live-in staff and family members, as well employees who come each day from their homes. As country folk, the people are very friendly and remarkably direct. Expect to be treated as family member. The atmosphere is extremely friendly. *Please note that failure to follow the instructions of the staff may result in you being asked to leave.

Kakurinbo was good to me :)
It is a place to become part of a family. Three communal meals, working side by side and having so much time in the day to explore together makes for a beautifully social experience. Compound this with the relative seclusion of Minobu and you'll end up forming bonds with everybody there.
Having or being willing to learn some Japanese will go a long way as it opens the door to friendships in the community and with local staff.
I was sorry to leave early but would happily have my time again.

Overall, I had a wonderful stay in Minobusan. The work was straightforward & the hours were honored. I loved working/bonding with a large group of fellow traveler-volunteers. Junko-san is lovely and is clearly an ambassador for the community; her ambition is inspiring!

Though it became apparent that he meant well, the volunteer coordinator did the bare minimum to orient and/or guide me throughout the experience. At times, he was difficult to work with; he seemed to have little regard for his attitude/tone of voice. With the right mindset, though, the experience is still happy/rewarding.

Kakurinbo was like second home for me. The staff is super friendly and Junko-san and her family are super welcoming. The work can be high pace sometimes, but I found it to be quite satisfying. Even more so if you have a nice world packers group, it’s one of the best times I’ve had. I’ve made friends I want to stay in contact with, so I highly recommend!

My time at Kakurinbo was so wonderful. Truly a once in a lifetime experience. Delicious meals cooked by the lovely Japanese staff, amazing cultural experiences, many opportunities to connect with nature and spirituality if you choose. Junko-san is dedicated to helping the small town of Minobu thrive and promoting foreigners to learn about local agriculture and customs. I was proud to be a part of such great work! Be prepared to work hard and the volunteer dorms are a work in progress but can be quite cozy.
