(Traducción al español disponible a continuación) Hi, I am Simon, a certified permaculture designer. I have hosted over 300 volunteers and have a 5 star rating on workaway. I have also served as a volunteer. Mizque is in the lonely planet as a place that sould be as well known as Samaipata for it's natural attractions. We are located between Cochabamba and Sucre. Easy to get to from Santa Cruz and to fit into plans to go to Salary de Uyuni. The farm family also consists of about 20 ducks, 8 chickens, 9 turkeys, 1 rooster, 1 horse, 7 rabbits, 3 dogs, and 2 cats. We take care to provide a welcoming and pleasant environment for our guests. We can host up to 8 volunteers at any time and usually have at least 3. There are two cabins available for guests. One has three divisions allowing for some privacy even in a shared space. We have two running bathrooms, but prefer to use our 2 composting toilets. We usually try to work the mornings, leaving the afternoons free to explore Mizque. The farm is located close to town, restaurants and shops but feels like el campo. Our approach is to be the light and live in a way that we can thrive and co-create abundance. In our opinion it is responsible that we all learn how to grow food and support development of resilient communities. We do this in a fun environment. Our competencies include eco construction, organic farming, seed saving, medicinal plants, alternative healing, healthy eating, and community building. If learning these things is important to you please consider taking our Holistic Living Permaculture Course. Please ask for details. Aside from those taking the course, we are accepting volunteers that are willing to stay a minimum of 2 weeks. If you wish for less there is a one week internship programme. Volunteers are asked to help with the work that is needed to be done at that time. This will include gardening, attending animals, watering, community work days and may include projects. While we try to vary tasks and do ensure tasks are adequately explained please understand that we cannot take time to explain all of the systems (unless you are taking the course) to volunteers. We must work also. The farm is situated 15 minutes walk from the plaza principal to the authentic city Mizque, set in a productive valley with a temperate climate. You can interact and experience a strong Quechua culture and practice your Spanish both on the farm and with the wider community. There are plenty of natural attractions to experience in your free time also. Three rivers run nearby to swim and some canyons and mountains to explore. The landscape is littered with Incan ruins and fossils revealing the rich history that Mizque has. Simon is also a mountain bike guide with bikes available for rent. Tours are offered at a discount to volunteers. The trails are World Class. All you need is an inquisitive mind and a great attitude. That said, we particularly appreciate people with a passion. E.g. dancing, massage, meditation, alternative healing, cooking, permaculture, building... If that says "me" to you then please send us a message. Our minimum stay for volunteering is two weeks, but we encourage a month to stay and be able to make a good contribution and experience the culture. Exceptions and different pricing for the course are made for shorter stays.

My partner and I volunteered on Simon’s permaculture farm for just over 2 weeks. We were mainly house sitting while Simon was abroad but spent some quality time when he returned. In that short amount of time we had together we learnt many different things about sustainability and permaculture. We would highly recommend this experience to any backpacker. Simon was super easy to get along with, he is extremely attentive & accommodating and the communication was perfect.

A wonderful stay with Simon- learnt so much and felt very welcomed. I loved learning about his work in the farm and his life within the community. He goes above and beyond to integrate you into the local area, whilst sharing his knowledge about Permaculture. Honestly would recommend this to anyone and I would love to come back one day!

Kaiwai is a lovely place connected to nature, animals and focused on healthy, organic food.
The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed, with the intention of creating good energy and putting effort in the current projects. People that bring ideas and a motivated mindset are welcomed!
The tasks partially include hard physical work, if you like that as well as being surrounded by nature, it’s your place to be!
Simon encourages you to explore the village and spend time with the local people. In the local school you can interact with the students, which was a great cultural experience!

Thank you, Karine, for sharing your experience. We’re glad you enjoyed Mizque and found the garden work rewarding! We’re sorry the first room made you uncomfortable — we understand phobias and quickly arranged another space. The spiders here aren’t dangerous, but we always want everyone to feel at ease. Our cook prepares weekday lunches, and volunteers share cooking breakfasts and dinners (including us as hosts). We also enjoy the occasional meal out together. Wishing you all the best in future
