Grand hostel Manin

The hostel is in the heart of the city, walking distance from the train station, the harbour, restaurants and pubs. The city is strategically located, you can easily reach 5 Terre within few minutes by train, small nice villages on the seaside and beaches in 30 min by bus; also Pisa and Genova can be visited in a one day trip ( it takes between 1/1'30 h to get there by train) and Florence is about 2,5 hours by train.

Of course we'll suggest you many other places less known but that worth a visit. In your free time you can explore the surroundings, hang out with guests ( the best part of this job is you'll meet people from all over the world!)

My name is Giulia, and I am 35 italian girl from La Spezia, a town in the north west of Italy, just beside 5 Terre, between Pisa and Genova. In 2016 my brother and I opened a hostel in my hometown, since that time we're looking for some help. We're young and easygoing, both travelled and lived abroad; we used to stay in hostels while travelling and I volunteered in 3 different hostels in Spain during one year, so we know what to expect from a volunteer but also his/her needs. Volunteers get a bed in a mixed bed dorm and breakfast. They can use all our facilities for free (kitchen, free ingredients for cooking, laundry, wifi, computer, etc.). Italy has so many things you can discover! First of all: food :-) We'll suggest you local food you cannot miss and teach you how to cook it if you want, as well as help you with language practise if you're up to learn italian :-) And of course you'll have the chance to meet people from everywhere! All we ask in exchange is for you to help us in reception, cleaning and organizing some social events with our guests. Although it's not strictly necessary, we give priorities to people that speak fluent spanish, beside english

I spent six unforgettable weeks there, surrounded by amazing people and breathtaking landscapes. The atmosphere at the hostel is warm and welcoming—I felt part of a little family from the very beginning. La Spezia is the perfect spot for travelers who enjoy hiking, with plenty of incredible trails and sea views, especially around Cinque Terre. And after a long day outdoors, you can enjoy delicious local food—totally worth it! I truly recommend this volunteer opportunity to anyone who wants to connect with people from all over the world, explore nature, and enjoy good food :D

I had a good time in this place with the team and guests!Everything was like the way it was told in the interview with Giulia.Nothing more or less so you can trust her word. She’s an understanding person and tries to make the best shift balance for everyone in the team so you can have enough time to discover area and surroundings. You can go to hikes or spend a day at the beach even between your shifts or take day trips to Florence, Pisa, Genova etc.Only downside was the volunteer house for me it was functioning but kinda old but I think new volunteers won’t stay in there so it’s all good.

I had a great experience volunteering in La Spezia for a month. Giulia, the host, was very kind, polite, and flexible she is always willing to adapt to any unexpected changes or personal plans I had. She cares about making sure you feel comfortable. The accommodation was a small shared apartment, but more than enough for a few weeks or a month. The reception staff were super friendly and fun, and they really helped make the stay enjoyable. I felt completely at home. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly!

I stayed 6 weeks and enjoyed the hostel’s fantastic location, and the chance to meet wonderful guests, staff, and fellow volunteers. The working hours were fair and gave me plenty of time to travel and explore. However, working with the owner, Giulia, was challenging. She often seemed stressed, which created tension for me. Sometimes communication was unclear and volunteers’ needs were not prioritized. Meals promised as free on the evening shift were charged, and having limited supplies in the apartment was not nice. Still, I’m grateful for the opportunity and for all the people I met.

Thank you for your feedback. Everyone’s suggestions are valuable and help us improve.I’d like to clarify that, as mentioned during the video call, the volunteer on shift is entitled to a free dinner if there are guests signed up for the event. Volunteers not on shift are welcome to join at a 50% discounted rate.Regarding pizza nights, I also explained that if a discount is available, it can be used for the volunteer on shift, though it’s not always guaranteed. I hope this is now clearer

I had an excellent experience overall. The team was welcoming and respectful, with great events like Pizza Nights, Saturday Spitz, and evening "aperitivos" that encouraged connection of volunteers and travelers. Free time and days off allowed plenty of travel, the region is beautiful and it has a lot to discover. The Hostel is clean, organized, and I only had good feedbacks from the guests. The only downside was the off-site apartment—volunteer-managed, not always clean, and with old, stained linens. Still, I met amazing people, explored new places, ate well, and had lots of fun.
