Biodiversity Project: Sustainable Gardening & DIY Workshop in Southern Spain

We are a small community living in the beautiful South of Spain, where we’re dedicated to creating a sustainable, self-sufficient living space. Our project focuses on biodiversity, organic gardening, and environmental stewardship, with an emphasis on building a harmonious ecosystem that nourishes both the land and the people who care for it. Our community is based on shared values of compassion, creativity, and sustainability. We welcome participants to join us for two weeks to help enhance the land, contribute to DIY projects, and cultivate a thriving, diverse garden.

Participants will stay in comfortable, shared accommodations. We have rooms in our house and a spacious tent for those who prefer outdoor living. The house is fully equipped with modern bathrooms, and the facilities are largely self-sufficient, featuring solar panels, wooden heating, and a large water reservoir. All participants will have access to well-equipped kitchen spaces to cook their own breakfasts and lunches, with dinners provided as a communal meal.

This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a community committed to sustainable living and biodiversity. You’ll learn valuable skills in organic gardening, composting, and DIY eco-projects, as well as firsthand experience with self-sufficient living. In addition, you’ll be introduced to sustainable farming practices, animal husbandry, and the basics of permaculture. Beyond practical skills, you'll have the chance to exchange ideas and perspectives with like-minded individuals in a relaxed, creative environment, surrounded by the natural beauty of southern Spain.

During your free time, you can relax by our two swimming pools, enjoy the warm weather, or take a dip in the jacuzzi. There’s also a lovely garden where you can unwind or spend time with our friendly cats and dogs. The town is a short 15-minute walk away, where you can explore local shops, cafes, and historical landmarks. The stunning beaches are only an hour’s drive from the house, providing the perfect escape for a weekend outing. There’s also plenty of hiking and nature trails nearby for those who love to explore the outdoors. We are located in a peaceful part of the south of Spain, offering both a tranquil retreat and easy access to cultural experiences.

We’re a small group of four friends living and growing together—creative, kind-hearted souls who love nature, animals, meaningful work, deep talks, shared meals, and laughing under the stars. 🌙🌿

This could be peaceful countryside for personal growth but in my experience on my third day I was told that they saw Worldpackers as a “colonial system” and that after 10 days I would be expected to behave as a full member of the community. Despite my efforts to adapt, I was consistently met with coldness and judgment. Communication was unclear, and when I asked about my work schedule after waiting a reasonable amount of time, I was spoken to in a dismissive manner:)The situation escalated when two members raised their voices at me for minutes, and I decided to leave the project early.

Eda stayed briefly as a volunteer. While polite in tasks, she developed an intense fixation on another volunteer, repeatedly demanding his removal despite no misconduct. She raised her voice at team members when confronted and was quite hysterical, creating tension in the group. To enforce fairness and protect the community, we had to respond firmly. Eda ultimately chose to leave. Reflection on separating emotions from facts would benefit her in future group settings as she struggled with this.

Overall , it wasn't a bad volunteer experience. I found that it could of been a fun, interesting, and very unorthodox way of learning and improving on the self . But unorthodox it very was for me as I come a from a more sun up yo sun down strict regiment. These personalities did clash a bit but not so much that things couldn't of been sorted out. However, there definitely seemed to be a conflict in interests and perspectives that it just ended in my early dismissal from the group. I have my own criticizing biases but it's good program for anyone open to just relax and learn.
