Help us care for Sri Lanka's Domesticated Elephant's

I stayed a week in Sri Lanka looking after the magnificently adorable the shelter 'Maali'. Amarasiri neranjan, their entire family and their coordinator opened me with warm welcome arms. The stay was comfortable and blessed with amazing authentic Sri Lankan food. Tbh i had no idea what i had signed up for but it turned out way better than expected. To see Maali so up close and understand the cruel reality Sri Lankan elephants are facing, maali stood as a strong voice against the cruelties backed by the lovely ppl at ECR. I would recommend everyone to come and help out.. Cheers

I stayed one week at ECRF and enjoyed spending time with the shelter Mali. Nera and his family do great work, ensuring all of Malis needs are met. The project seems very ethical. Before applying you should know that it doesn't have much to do with volunteering, as there is not much work for the volunteers to do. I kinda felt like I was just financing this project while being on a holiday. So you should be okay with that when you plan on staying there. The only real downside for me was the accommodation. The room was moldy, smelly and the shower didn't work reliably…

My stay at the shelter for 1 week was my first actual volunteering experience and I loved every second of it! We cared for the shelter Mali, watched her bathe in the river and fed her many bananas :) I learned so much about the life and treatment of elephants, as well as the history of Sri Lanka! We also did many other interesting activities like hiking to a buddhist temple or visiting a real Sri Lankan tea factory. The home-cooked food was always amazing and the family made sure that I had everything I need and felt welcome throughout my stay! Definetely recommend it!

Nera and his family were gracious hosts and made sure all of our needs were met 24/7! The foundation is the perfect embodiment of ethical treatment for domesticated elephants in Sri Lanka. Had lots of personal time with their the shelter Mali :) They give a domesticated elephants a break from the unethical riding businesses and other employments where they are forced to work very hard. At ECF, they are given the shelter they deserve and can roam free as they would in the wild. Supporting this foundation was empowering & gratifying. The home cooked meals were also amazing! Great Sri Lankan food.

I feel very lucky to have participated to this project,I learned so much about elephants and their life here.It was the first time for me traveling alone outside Europe, and with Neranjan and Amarasiri, the family, and the people around I felt so safe and welcomed. They introduced me to their culture with open arms and open heart. They were all the time available to answer questions, explain the project with authenticity. There is a lot of effort and love in their work and purpose, and this was inspiring. We did a lot of activities and I spent a lot of time with Mali❤️and the food was great!

My time in the shelter was exactly what I wanted my experience to be. I was able to learn about elephants in Sri Lanka and feel I was really contributing for their well-being. And, at the same time, I had the opportunity to meet both local and international people. The hosts and the team are very nice people and try their best to make you feel comfortable. They will show you around and teach you about their culture. Last but not least, the project is a really beautiful and meaningful. The work they do for the elephants is incredible. I'm very happy I was part of it! :)

This is a great experience to get in touch with locals in a non touristic area and learn about elephants conditions in sri lanka. Amarasiri and Nera just want the best for you! All the ECRF staff is really nice and you won't have any problem and if you will, they will help you anyway. So just be open, respectful and book for this experience!

Nera and his family were extremely welcoming in every way! Their first priority is to make sure the volunteers are comfortable. I slept at an hotel across the street of the family's house. The room was primitive, but had all I needed. Lots of the shelter projects call themselves 'ethical', but this one really was! They rent elephants away from where they are exploited and let them roam around freely in the woods and live their best life. Tourists can come and watch the elephants from a distance, but the shelter decides when and where to go, we only follow. Thx for the best experience!
