Get to know Berlin while helping in a cozy hostel

The hosts are kind and flexible, and the atmosphere with guests is also friendly. While there may be issues that need resolving, they are usually straightforward. While the hours are long, the tasks are simple and easy. For me, it was a good experience.

Pablo, we are really happy about you volunteering with us. I mean, during you long hours, which you mentioned, you can sleep. ;-) So they are not really long we believe...but we love your way with the people, your handy man skills and would 100% recommend you :-) Thanks Pablo!

Disappointing experience. The project presents itself as social, but feels impersonal. Volunteers are treated like cleaning staff, working over 50h/week with no real space for dialogue, yet we are also the ones living with the residents, supporting them emotionally, resolving tensions, and navigating delicate interpersonal dynamics. There's a lack of communication and presence from the host. What gave true meaning to my stay were the connections with residents and the hired team members at the reception. This place has potential but it needs to value people over profit to truly make an impact.

The managers and everyone were super nice, and it was pretty flexible that if I needed a day off it could be arranged. The hostel is in a great area and it was a good opportunity to improve my German. The work isn't that difficult and the accommodation was also ok. However, the hours are a lot more than they say, for example, a weekend usually includes at least a 24 hour shift. You aren't necessarily working the whole time but you aren't able to leave during your shift.

Dear kaya! We loved to have you as a volunteer!! Thank you for your commitment and lovely nature :-) Just for clarification: the weekend shift goes from 3pm until 8am . You don´t really have to work during those hours, you can even sleep and stay in your room. So you basically just have to be there in case for an emergency...We believe, there are much harder volunteer positions out there ;-)

The experience had its challenges. On the positive side, the location is good and it was the only available volunteer position in Berlin at the time. Communication was unclear from the start, leading to misunderstandings. A clearer explanation of tasks and more support during unforeseen situations would have helped. Security is limited, as access is granted via a shared code. They decided to end the arrangement after I missed some shifts due to illness, without prior communication to seek solutions.

It's an amazing location the Hostel. Dani, the owner and Oliver the receptionist, they were very friendly and receptive. It's a Hostel for Homeless and Refugies, people that leaves in there, they are depressed... It's not a hard job.The main job is being present at the hostel. If happens something, maybe you will need to call the ambulance or police to solve the situation. The working time is 17 p.m until 9 a.m. You can sleep between 23 p.m and 6:30, but not leave the hostel. It's only you and 1 more volunteer. It's for you? : If you want a well located hostel and a social impact, yes!

Vinícus was one of the best volunteers we ever had!!! He was so reliable, flexible and is a sincerely nice loving person. He has a great sense for people and is hard working and takes responsibility. We would take him back any time!

The place is not a hostel. It's a housing for homeless people or refugees. It's very well located, so if you want to know the city, it's great. You have to stay at the hostel for several hours during your shifts and on weekends (they don't say about weekends). Also they have a lot of rules, some are kind of non sense. It was not the nicest experience.

The tasks are simple, the place is clean, and the location is great. But ... the organization leaves much to be desired, it seems that there is no communication between them, because one says/does something and the next day the other completely undoes it, certain people will eat your food, and when you say it they do not give you any solution, despite the fact there are cameras, in case you need anmeldung, they charge you a 'kaution' of 200 euros, and the amount of hours is much higher than what it says, on your nightshifts you must spend the night there, until 8AM.

Thanks Gustavo! People didn´t eat your food, as we told you: our cleaning lady accidentally threw away some of your food, because she thought that you have checked out. We appologized for that more than once now. The cameras are there for security reasons, which you signed up for when you arrived committing to our house rules. (so no-one can steal your food for instance) The organization is hard to follow through when you have someone (you) who doesn´t care what his job is and does what he wants anyway. And yes, during your nightshift, you have to spend the night there - thats literally the name of the task.
