Programa detallado
In Guatemala we are based in Santiago Atitlán, one of the maya indigenous communities of Sololá that houses several towns around the Atitlán Lake.
Santiago is a small town with approximately 45.000 inhabitants. For the 90% of the population Tz'utujil is their mother tongue, one of the 24 indigenous languages spoken in Guatemala. It is a beautiful town with a lot of history and with an important indigenous culture that makes it especially unique and interesting. In Santiago Atitlán, we are focused on teaching English in primary schools. English class is part of the national primary school curriculum, but very few primary education teachers have the skills to teach the language to their students. At this moment, we are collaborating with four primary schools, where our volunteers teach English to 5th and 6th graders. With these lessons, we are preparing them for their English classes
Actividades & Turnos
You must have travel insurance to come to Guatemala. If you need help we can give you some information about different companies and prices.
The minimum length of stay is 4 weeks. If possible, we ask the volunteers to stay at least 12 weeks in the project to give more consistency and continuity to the children and our project goals. Longer stays also greatly improve the quality, depth, and breadth of your experience and achievements with this project.
The minimum number of hours a volunteer is required to work is 16 hours per week from Monday to Thursday. Volunteers do not teach from Friday to Sunday, so that they can travel and enjoy their stay in Guatemala during the long weekends.
Reglas
Although the level of English we teach is low, we require our volunteers to have an intermediate level of English to be a teacher and communicate with volunteers from other countries.
Regarding costs, the volunteer is responsible for their transportation to and from Guatemala, the cost of their own accommodation, meals and other expenses. One,Two…Tree does not charge any fee for administration and project management. Prices in Santiago vary depending on the host family and they are around 250-300 USD. These differences owe to the conditions of your stay and the services these families provide.
